Jumping the Broom: A Sacred Celebration of Love

Jumping the Broom: A Sacred Celebration of Love

Author: JeRai, Pentad Weddings by JeRai

When love calls, we answer with honor—and tradition.

As a Virginia girl, born in the state that proudly boasts “Virginia is for Lovers,” I’ve always held love close to my heart. Now rooted in Georgia, I have the privilege of helping couples celebrate that love through one of the most sacred and symbolic rituals in African-American wedding tradition: Jumping the Broom.

This powerful act goes far beyond decoration or custom—it is a legacy.

Historically, jumping the broom dates back to the time of slavery, when enslaved people were denied legal rights to marry. Despite this, they created their own sacred traditions—honoring love in resistance and unity. The broom became a symbol of sweeping away the old and stepping into a new life, together.

Today, it’s more than just a nod to the past—it’s a declaration of pride, commitment, and ancestral honor. Every time a couple jumps the broom in one of my ceremonies, I feel that history come alive again. The brooms used are often beautifully adorned with ribbon, jewels, and personal touches—transforming this ancestral ritual into a meaningful and majestic moment of celebration.

Whether you’re in Virginia, Georgia, or beyond—when you choose to jump the broom, you’re not just celebrating your marriage. You’re anchoring your love in something deep, powerful, and eternal.

So when you’re ready to take that leap of love—know that I’m here, broom in hand, heart wide open.

With love,

JeRai
